English ceramics with lustre glazing are found in almost any mariner's home in the age of the sailing ships. Seafarers in Darß display the glittering pieces in copper or gold prominently on chests of drawers or sideboards, where they are real eye-catchers. Trinkets like this were relatively inexpensive and affordable for sailors; their sentimental value was often what made them precious.

Known as 'golden pots', these items, together with other stoneware and ceramics from England, were virtually ubiquitous in the decorated homes of seafarers from the North and Baltic seas in the 2nd half of the 19th century.
