Tapestry work - The Queen of Sheba before King Solomon

Tapisserie Die Königin von Saba vor König Salomon
  • 2nd half of 16th century
  • wool, silk and linen
  • height: 361 cm

The main part of the Wismar tapestry shows the Queen of Sheba’s homage to King Solomon. The two lower sections show the anointing of Solomon as King and the Solmonic verdict. The carpet is framed with a border with eight different allegorical figures showing virtues such as loyalty, moderation and hope.

From the middle of the 16th century Flemish carpet makers, who had left their home country for religious reasons, settled in Wismar. They worked for the Mecklenburg Duke, but also for convents and town citizens.
