Seven Sisters Kiss the One Sea (model)

The sculpture is a smaller version of its eponymous counterpart, mounted on a fountain at Kröpeliner Tor in Rostock. Its quadratic base shows seven female dancers. The women in the sculpture symbolise the peaceful bond between the nations bordering the Baltic Sea. It is therefore an expression of the peace policies propagated by the GDR. A gateway to the world, the GDR uses Rostock as a representative site and a place to grandstand the achievements of the socialist state.

The 'Baltic Weeks' are held here each year from 1958 to 1975 as a meeting between delegates of the Baltic nations. The GDR uses the occasion to polish its public image as a peaceable and liberal country. Political demonstrations and conferences dominate the Baltic Weeks, although there are also numerous cultural events.
