Andreas Kielmann: Stealing of the Prince in Güstrow

Andreas Kielmann Güstrower Prinzenraub
  • 2nd half of 19th century
  • oil on canvas

On 17th January 1637 Adolf Frederick I. opened up the closed rooms of the widowed duchess Eleonora Maria in Güstrow Palace and took by force his then four year old nephew, the later Duke Gustav Adolph of Mecklenburg-Güstrow. According to a testamentary order from Duke John Albert II. of Mecklenburg-Güstrow, who died in 1636, Eleonora Maria should arrange for her son to be raised in a Calvinist manner. Yet Calvinism conflicted with the Lutheran denomination in Mecklenburg and threatened the unity of the church in the state.
