New school regulations were introduced for domanial schools in Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1771. There should be teaching for six hours every day in winter and for a “few days” in summer (due to field work). The knights themselves decided upon the need for teaching.

In 1760 a university was founded in Bützow with ducal professors and 50 to 90 students. The professors paid by the cities stayed in Rostock. Bützow University was closed again in 1789.
