Piece of wood for reading

turned, 15th/16th century, length: 6 to 12 cm

The small pieces of wood acted as reading aids to prevent people getting lost among the generally small handwriting. They also prevented people touching precious books with their hands. They were often decorated on one end with an elaborately carved hand.
